MIAMI — On Aug. 23, 2018, more than 30 youth, including DREAMers and family affected by TPS, came together to announce why they are supporting Andrew Gillum. Afterwards, they joined others in a phone banking and texting party to get out the vote across Florida during these important early voting days.
The event was organized by a coalition of eight local and national progressive organizations, who previously announced a collective commitment of resources in the final week of Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum’s historic primary campaign for Governor, investing over $3 million to reach over 3 million voters with their efforts. The coalition includes leading Florida grassroots groups Dream Defenders Action, FLIC Votes, New Florida Majority, The New Florida Vision PAC and Organize Florida and national progressive organizations Center for Popular Democracy Action, The Collective PAC, Indivisible Action, NextGen America, Our Revolution and People For the American Way.
The following is a message from Maria Angelica, a DREAMer:
“As a queer woman, a mother and an immigrant, l feel respected and heard by Andrew Gillum. I support him because in the midst of the lying, bigoted, money-driven politics that are destroying Florida, he rises as an honest presence ready to act on the really important issues. He gets it — and l believe his initiatives can make the most significant difference in individual lives, and in our society.”
The following is a statement by Nancy Metayer with New Florida Vision:
“TPS is a plaguing issue in the Haitian community. Extension for many has ended, pushing them back to cholera, deforestation, severe hurricanes, poor infrastructure and the list goes on and on. So many people are migrating due to climate and environmental issues. Therefore, Andrew Gillum protecting our environment also means protecting immigrants.”
